If your kids haven’t read any of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books yet they are missing out. The Wimpy Kid books tell the story of Greg Heffley’s misadventures in middle school. Written as graphic novels these books are so funny and engaging they have spawned three movies!
I love the books because the main character (and narrator) Greg is completely selfish and often a bit of a jerk. Why in the world do I like this in a character in a kids’ book? I like it because while Greg can’t see how selfish he is, it is perfectly clear to the reader…even a middle school reader. Greg happens to do all those things we’d like to do in our daily life but don’t. Greg is a little too honest at times and completely dishonest at others. Basically, he’s a pre-pubescent boy. While he can be a jerk and dishonest, things rarely work out the way he planned them, so hopefully the lesson learned is, “don’t be like Greg Heffley”. His best friend Rowley, on the other hand, is unfailingly kind and generous…and guess what? He almost always ends up with the better end of the deal.
Some of the jokes can be a bit off-color…The book is about middle schoolers, after all. For us, that’s not a deal breaker.
These books are perfect for kids ages 8-12. Reluctant readers will be drawn in by the illustrations and the books will most likely be enjoyed by everyone in the family over the age of five.
We love these books so much we own every one of them!
